All Nespresso capsules are recyclable at Oricol’s recycling facility in Johannesburg and Cape Town using a customised packaging separation machine developed by Nespresso. This specialised machine is able to separate the aluminium from the spent coffee grounds in the used capsules. Using a mechanical process, the aluminium in used capsules is separated from the coffee grounds and then undergoes a further recycling process at a steel smelter where it is reused to make new aluminium products. The leftover coffee grounds however, are given over to the Bokashi fermentation process which is a globally accepted wet waste composting solution that uses food waste only to serve as nutrient rich soil food.

THE RECYCLING JOURNEY
WHY ALUMINIUM?
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
How are my capsules recycled? What happens with them?
After collection, the coffee pods are transported to our local recycling partner, Oricol Environmental Services, in Johannesburg and Cape Town. There, a specialized machine is used to separate the packaging from the used coffee grounds. The coffee grounds are given over to the Bokashi fermentation process which is a globally accepted wet waste composting solution that uses food waste only to serve as nutrient rich soil food. The plastic and aluminium will be transformed into new products
How can I be sure that they are really recycled?
Nespresso works closely with service providers to ensure that capsules collected are recycled. Nespresso's recycling program has been verified by third party auditors and monthly checks are conducted to monitor the volume of recycled capsules.
Why does Nespresso use aluminum when other materials are available?
Aluminum is the best material to protect the freshness, taste and quality of the Nespresso coffees, maintaining the high-quality standard of the coffee from roasting to cup. It has a unique advantage of being infinitely recyclable and thanks to the robustness of aluminum, there is no need for additional packaging to protect the freshness and taste. Recycled aluminum is extremely versatile. An estimated 75% of all aluminum ever produced is still in use today, according to the European Aluminum Association.
Can I open the capsules and only recycle the aluminum part?
The size and weight of small, light aluminium items makes it very difficult to be sorted and disposed of in the correct way via normal household recycling. This is why we have invested in a range of recycling services and a dedicated processing facility.
